New Year, New Schedule

SpaceNeedleNewYear

Happy New Year, Fair Play fans! We know we’ve apologized multiple times for our delinquency but here it is again — I’m very sorry for putting this project on the back burner. I’m currently finishing writing my dissertation (defending at the end of February!) and that, with other research projects, has precluded too much blogging.

Talking about Babies and Gender

BabyTowel

How important is it that you know whether this little baby is a boy or a girl – immediately?

This week we are revisiting some favorite posts geared toward talking about gender. Monday we took up how to discuss gender fair values in your family. Today we examine talking about gender with prospective new parents.

I was out at a bar with a Fair Play Friend and some of his friends when the following exchange occurred:

Fair Play Friend: So do you know if it is a boy or a girl?
FPF’s friend: We’re not going to find out. You don’t get too many surprises in life.

I was floored.

Talking about Gender with Family

This week we are returning to some previous posts about how to talk about gender. First up, a post about handling gender fair values in your family. Later this week, how to talk (or not to) about gender with prospective parents.

This might come as a shock, dear readers, but not everyone is on board with this gender-fair business. Some people think differences between boys and girls should be encouraged. Others simply don’t see the harm that comes from not doing anything. Certainly the mainstream media is a culprit, but what about the people in your own life? What if, in fact, the gendered dialogue comes from family members, people whose efforts and affection are ostensibly directed toward your child’s happiness?

New Year, New Babies: Gifts for Newborns

It’s true that new babies can be born any time of the year, but it’s fun to talk about them this time of the year when the new year is still fresh and the weather outside is gloomy. We also got a Gift Guide letter about this, so why not? File this one away for the next new baby in your life if you don’t find it to be timely. Anyway, unless you’ve actually had a newborn child of your very own, it can be kind of daunting to shop for one. It can also be one of the most difficult arenas in which to fight the gender-fair battle. There is a lot of pink and blue, and also a lot of CUTE! So be forewarned, you will need to approach your shopping with your gender-fair mantras in-hand (in-brain?). Let’s take a look at some of the options.

A Christmas Hail Mary: Homemade Gift Certificates

FPCert

It’s December 23. You actually have all of today to shop and in most places, a good part of tomorrow. The price, of course, is your sanity and a lot of your time. But supposing you’re done braving the crowds, or you get to tomorrow evening and you are desperate, or perhaps you want to put a little time into your final effort. Let’s talk about the homemade gift certificate.

re-Gift Guide: The Princess Problem (Gifts for 2 & 5 y/o Girls – doll, art supplies, scooter)

We’ve been negligent in getting up Gift Guides this holiday season, owing to an unfortunate surgery and lengthy hospital stay. But, we’re back in action! To provide you with maximum content and inspiration, we’re going to do some “re-Gift Guides,” re-posting/revising some of our favorites from the past, in addition to brand new Gift Guides. As always, if you have a specific question, send it our way! Today we kick off with the re-Gift Guide to purchasing for the princess-loving little girls in your life. How to avoid stereotypes? We have some answers!

Gift Guide: Baby Shower

IMG_0587_2This week is something of a Gift Guide in reverse, since if we’re being honest, we totally ripped off Fair Play Friend Paige. But, Paige had some great, gender-fair ideas for her shower gift and we wanted to showcase them alongside our own latest favorite shower gift. We haven’t talked about babies since the New Year (!) so it’s probably about time to revisit our shower gifts discussion.

Safer Fun in The Sun: Sunscreen Tips For Everyone!

Kiss My Face mineral sunscreen gets a strong score from the Environmental Working Group in terms of health safety. It is also vegan, gluten-free, and not tested on animals!

Consider this week’s post more of a PSA. It’s gender-fair in the sense that it is super important for boys, girls, and YOU. We’re going to talk about sunscreen. I’ve recently developed a sun allergy and I’ve been doing my sunscreen homework. I have some weird allergies, but this one wins the award for most inconvenient/hardest to maintain a normal lifestyle and still play by my as-few-chemicals-as-possible rule (and no animal testing!). This week I’m going to share all of my research with you so you can freak out about chemicals or UV rays or whatever, and then get yourself some safer coverage – for the good of your family, and the planet.

Getting Reel: What about Disney? (Part I)

disney-princess-group_clipart1Welcome to Getting Reel! We decided we were writing enough about movies that they merited their very own, named, on-going series (like Book Review for our posts about books, Game Night for games, or Gift Guide for our answers to your shopping questions!). Today we’re responding to a reader question about Disney movies. We’ve written before about movies – but always alternatives to the classic animated Disney movies. So what about Disney? As it turns out, my own interest in studying gender began in a high school film studies class (in a magical land, far far away, and also a long time ago). My capstone project for that class was a historical overview of gender in Disney’s animated movies. Naturally, I pulled up that paper to inform this post, and I have two observations: 1) Not a bad paper, teenage Emily! and 2) Disney’s history is a sensible place to start. Next week we’ll take on what Disney is doing more recently.

New Year, New Babies: Talking about Babies and Gender

How important is it that you know whether this little baby is a boy or a girl – immediately?

I was out at a bar with Fair Play Boyfriend and some of his friends not terribly long ago when the following exchange occurred:

Fair Play Boyfriend: So do you know if it is a boy or a girl?
FPBF’s friend: We’re not going to find out. You don’t get too many surprises in life.

I was floored.
